Home Chef offers a weekly dinner meal delivery service of pre-portioned ingredients for healthy recipes that allow you to prepare home cooked meals in about 30 minutes. Every week Home Chef creates 13 new recipes that fit a number of different lifestyles. This includes vegetarian, gluten-free, low-carb and nut-free meals (among others). All ingredients are fresh and you will receive 2 to 7 meals for either 2 or 4 people depending on the subscription you choose. Meals sent to you are automatically selected based on your dietary preferences and profile settings. The automated meal selections can be changed or weeks skipped at anytime before the weekly deadline.

HomeChef.com was started in 2013 and since then has grown to over 300 employees. They now delivers to about 90% of the United States and in 2015 they delivered over 1 million meals.

How It Works

Visit HomeChef.com and enter your email address and zip code to get started in creating your account. Home Chef will then ask you about your Dietary Preferences and Delivery Preferences. For Dietary you select if you prefer to eat meat, seafood, and/or vegetables (you must select at least one). The next question lists and asks if you wish to avoid any ingredients. This includes Pork, Red Meat, Gluten, Mushrooms, Soy, Nuts, Dairy, and Shellfish. Selecting 1 or more of these ingredients will mean the recipes you receive will not include your selection. The one caveat of this is that all ingredients are processed at the same facility so Home Chef cannot guarantee cross-contamination. Therefore the Home Chef service may not be right for you if you have a severe allergy. The last question for the Dietary Preference section asks if you prefer Low-calorie and/or Low-carb meals. You can select both, one, or none.

For Delivery Preference you can select to receive up to 6 meals a week for 2, 4, or 6 people. You then select your weekly delivery date for your meal box. This depends on your location but most deliveries can happen from Tuesdays to Fridays. On the next page you then enter your name, address, and phone number. The final page asks for a password for your new account along with your payment information. It lists your subscription costs along with your delivery details and when you can expect your first weekly meal delivery. As an added bonus all first time deliveries will receive a Home Chef 3 ring binder called the Cookbook. This binder is used to store the colored recipe cards you will receive.

Each week Home Chef develops 10 recipes that fit a variety of eating lifestyles. Based on your dietary preferences, Home Chef will automatically select the best menu for you and deliver you a box full of pre-portioned ingredients along with the new and exciting recipes. These selections can be changed or skipped anytime before the weekly deadline. Changes must happen before 12pm (Central Standard Time) on the Friday before the scheduled delivery date. You can schedule or skip deliveries multiple weeks in advance. This all can be done under the Delivery Schedule tab on the HomeChef.com account page.

Meals at Home Chef are designed to stay fresh for the week you receive them. Some meals that have fish or seafood (or some other ingredients) are recommended to be cooked first. Each recipe will state the number of days it is recommended to cook it by, from when the meal was delivered.

Along with the ingredients each meal will have a colored recipe card with pictures that contains step by step instructions on how to prepare and cook the meal. The recipe cards also contain health information about the meal like calories, fats, carbohydrates, protein, fiber and sodium. The recipes are designed for beginners and seasoned home cooks alike, and take about 30 minutes to cook and prep.

Home Chef Apps

Home Chef has apps available on iTunes and Google Play. With the app you can:

  • Manage your weekly deliveries
  • View the weekly recipes along with photos
  • Add your review of the weekly meals

Costs & Plans

Home Chef keeps the prices for their meals simple. There are no plans, instead it costs $9.95 per serving for any meal. So if you order 3 meals for 2 people (2 servings per meal for a total of 6) it will cost $59.70 per week.

They do have several add-ons which can be found on the Taste Profile tab. These add-ons include a Breakfast ($9.95), Fruit Basket ($4.95), Smoothie ($4.95), and Premium Meal. These tasty add-ons recipes vary week to week.

New households may receive a $10 bonus credit from a Home Chef secret sale when you create your account.

* Prices based on a weekly subscription. Prices can increase/decrease depending on subscription length. All prices in USD unless specified other wise. Costs and features offered last checked July 09, 2016.

Guarantee

Home Chef does offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee. They are one of the few meal delivery services to do so. If you are not 100% happy with your meal kit for the week you don't have to pay. Some conditions do apply.

Delivery

Home Chef delivers all across the continental United States. Shipping is free for orders over $40. If less, shipping costs $10 a week. You can specify which week day (Tuesday to Friday) you would like your food delivered on. If you are not home, the shipper will leave your box at your door. The Home Chef meal box contains an insulated liner and cold packs so your ingredients will stay fresh and cold until you get home. The box is recyclable.

My neighbor sent me a referral code for 30$ off first order. This made the price drop down to the same price I pay for same exact service through BLUE APRON. I figured that I would try HC out to see if adding another service onto my current one or completely replacing BA with HC was a good idea. I’ve had some health problems over the last few years and my mobility and strength has made it difficult to do the most common of errands or simplest of activities like going to the bank or to the grocery store to go shopping. I had not had a chance to make it to bank so all I had was cash atm. My neighbor offered to let me pay him with cash and he would use his CC to sign me up. We signed up using my home address which is a mother-in-law apartment on my landlords property, aka “B” unit. His house has the main house number and my address is the same but with a “B” after the house number. I wake up days later to a letter from HC telling me that I can’t use the credit of 30$ to purchases anyorders  and that my credit card had been refunded and my account has been deactivated due to having “same” address as another customer. They didn’t try to contact me before hand to find out why or question any of this before doing so. So now I have to wait 7-10 business days to get a refund on my neighbors cc then wait to get the cash from him. Then wait till I have enough energy to get out of the house to go food shopping for myself. It seems that this wouldn’t be a problem for customers that are in a multi dwelling units such as apartment or condos. Many have the same house number like “61543 n main st”. Following with “A, B, C, D”  for the unit number. I believed my neighbor for a short time did the cancellation assuming that a company wouldn’t just take matter into own hands with out trying to solve the “issue” before making me feel as if I did something wrong and fraudulent. The worst part about situation was me pausing my order from BA for a week to try out HC and now not being able to have my order shipped for this week. Thank you to HC for taking advantage of disabled senior who is just trying to survive this rough patch of health life has thrower at me.
Pros
The idea of having fresh food delivered to your home. Esp useful since I’m disabled and can’t go to store like I would like to.
Cons
Without warning or any communication they cancelled account and refunded a card that wasn’t mine due to me using cash and my neighbor used their CC
Bottom Line
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

My boyfriend and I started HomeChef to keep us from eating out all the time. We love cooking together and the recipes for HomeChef were clear, easy to make (most of the time) and almost ALWAYS delicious (unless he overcooked the pork....). We would have kept with it, but we started the Keto Diet. Although they offer "low carb" options, their nutritional content doesn't provide a fiber count so we can't determine if the meals are within our daily limits for carbs. If they would just implement this one piece of information, we would start back in a heartbeat!
Pros
The recipes!!
Cons
No Fiber Content...
Bottom Line
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.

Every week there has been something in package not fresh.  First week, one package of meat ruined due to improper sealing.  Next week it happened again with one piece of chicken.  I received a rotten lime this week and three carrots that were like rubber.  Customer service is fine ,the food selection and delivery is good,  but disappointed  with problems with food.

Quality of food

I tried Hello Fresh first for about 3 months and wasn't completely satisfied with the meal options. There was not enough every week. I really like the idea of these meal services so I gave it another chance and tried HomeChef.com.  I am glad I did as they have many more meal options every week than Hello Fresh along with the ability to buy a basket of fruit which I enjoy for snacks. It is seasonal fruit and is always fresh, large, and tasty.

The recipes that Home Chef comes up with our very good and easy to cook with most of mine taking about 30 minutes. The recipe cards and cold packaging are also excellent. I am definitely glad I made the switch and plan to continue using Home Chef.
Pros
Fresh Food at a reasonable price. Lots of meals to choose from.

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.

I have been really enjoying my dinner boxes from Home Chef. The meal selections are the best of the competitors like Hello Fresh , Blue Apron and Plated. They also have the most options of 10 different meals every week. I also like the fact that they tag right on the menu page what each meal is for.  Right away you know if it is vegetarian, glutton-free, or if it contains nuts.

The difficulty levels of the meals are accurate as well. I usually choose between the easy and intermediate level. The harder the level usually the longer it takes to prepare and cook.

The smoothies are also excellent and tasty with different types of fruit and yogurt every week.

I also just discovered that Home Chef offers breakfasts meal kits as well. I plan on adding that to my subscription  for next week. They defiantly look good and I am curious about the variety they can offer over time. Currently it looks like they only have 1 breakfast a week which is fine by me as I plan to use it on the weekend when I have time to cook a big meal.

I will report back in a month or so if the Home Chef breakfast meals live up to expectations!!!

Pros
Variety of dinners to choose from
Cons
The odd time my meal box has been damaged on the outside

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.
